Obesity in dogs is a growing concern among the veterinary industry. Studies have revealed that obesity can be linked to organ failure, diabetes, arthritis and even premature death.

When is a dog considered to be overweight?

A quick judge can be done if you look at your pet from above. You want to be able to see a waistline (hourglass shape). You also want to be able to feel your pet’s ribs, without them protruding. Are some breeds prone to obesity?

Yes, some breeds are considered “prone,” but any pet regardless of breed can become overweight if they are not properly monitored. Remember, just five extra pounds on a Beagle is 21 extra pounds on an adult human!

Why should you have weight loss & management consultation in-clinic?

While it is easier to weigh some pets at home than others, every scale is different. Also, having your pet come to the clinic for regular weigh-ins allows our veterinary team to track your pet’s progress and offer suggestions and helpful tips when needed.
